What are the Shadow Diaries?
Welcome to the Shadow Diaries by Jennifer Bauer. This is a free online educational resource that you may use to help you in your personal equine development. Shadow is a 3 year old gaited horse that is being trained for the first time on our farm in Baxter, TN. We are filming every day of her training for the first month. Due to the repetitive nature of the training during the second month we will condense the material for you. Jennifer Bauer will be going through her training routine that she would perform on any given gaited horse. However, since Shadow is an individual, there will be aspects of her training that she will learn quicker than others and thus will require different amounts of attention.

We are going to release the videos weekly and will break them up into 5-10 minute clips.
Why are we giving it to you for free?
Our goal is to be an educational resource for you. We have created the Shadow Diaries with Jennifer Bauer to show you that gaited horses are great and can do many things that other horses can EXCEPT WITH A SMOOTH RIDE!!!!! We will also disprove the myth that the only way to get a gaited horse to gait is through the use of extreme tack and tactics. I want to reiterate that this is one specific horse being started, we do not start horses at clinics, each horse is unique.
Are you sure the Shadow Diaries are FREE?
From our survey we had people ask about making a donation to help cover costs. The internet version of the Shadow Diaries is completely FREE for your use. If you find it helpful/educational please tell your friends about this project. We hope that the Shadow Diaries facilitate in the education for the people who already know about Jennifer Bauer as well as the people who don’t. We also want it to serve as a resource for people who are considering getting into Gaited Horses. As an industry we need to educate horse owners on why owning a Gaited Horse is a wonderful thing. To often gaited horses get labeled as crazy or show ring oddities. Education can change this attitude. I will show you that hollowing out your horse’s back and using tack that looks like it came from the medieval age is not a prerequisite to gait. At the end of the day a Gaited Horses is a horse. If your horse is bred to gait it will gait with proper horse and rider training.
Now that I’ve seen Jennifer Bauer start a horse should I be able to do this on my own?
Jennifer Bauer believes that horses should be started by a professional that you trust. A young gaited horse needs the confidence and expertise that a professional can provide. Your horse will respond to your body language and your confidence, this can dramatically affect your ability to get the desired result. Each and every training session should be customized to the horse’s specific needs.
Is Jennifer doing this to get more training horses?
No, unlike many trainers Jennifer has not had any trouble keeping a horse training waiting list. Will we answer all of your questions?
From our survey we had a lot of requests for specific content in the Shadow Diaries. As Shadow progresses in her training we may be able to answer your questions. However, the training is not and never will be rider specific. It would not be fair to Shadow to spend 2-3 hours filming a day to get the right shots and explain every aspect in comprehensive detail. She will get the training she needs when and how she needs in the way that best helps her. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this might cause. Will the Shadow Diaries be available for purchase on DVD?
Yes, we plan to have it available for purchase after Shadow’s training is complete. We plan to offer it at a low price point because we don’t have the professional film/editing expenses. However, Shadow is still in training and since we don’t know how much film we are going to end up with (how many DVDS) we don’t have a price figured out yet. If you sign-up for our free newsletter the Gaited Gazette, we will notify you when it will be ready. Subscribers to our newsletter will receive a coupon to advance order the Shadow Diaries.
Is Shadow being filmed every day?
Shadow is being filmed every day for the first month and because of the repetitive nature of the second month will be filmed a couple times a week. Jennifer Bauer and Shadow will work rain or shine, snow or heat wave. However, Shadow will get a break during lighting storms!!
What about the audio quality?
Yes, we know the audio needs help, we’ve done everything we can do to make it as good as possible. Please keep in mind that the Shadow Diaries are free. We did not hired a professional film/editing crew, and thus have been learning on the job. We only hope that you learn as much about Gaited Horses as we have learned about filming!! The audio get dramatically better starting around day 10. When the project is complete we will offer a “for purchase” version which will include all the edited out video as well as voiced over audio for the days that it was a problem.
What about the video quality?
The Shadow Diaries by Jennifer Bauer is being hosted on YouTube. We are using their recommended settings. The fuzziness you see is from lowering the quality of the video to fit YouTube’s specifications. This allows users with different internet speeds to access the film. Please keep in mind we have several rural users who cannot get high speed internet. The “for purchase” version will be.
Can I show this project to my own audience?
Yes, we’ve had several people already contact us about using the Shadow Diaries in their own websites, newsletter, trail club meetings ect.
